Measuring Scholarly Impact: Comparative Insights from Citation and Bibliometric Analyses

Abstract

The growing importance of research evaluation has increased the use of quantitative methods for assessing scholarly impact. Among these, citation analysis and bibliometric analysis are widely used to measure research influence and understand patterns of scholarly communication. Citation analysis focuses on citations received by publications, authors, and journals, while bibliometric analysis adopts a broader perspective by examining publication trends, collaboration networks, authorship patterns, and the development of research fields. This paper presents a comparative examination of citation analysis and bibliometric analysis within the framework of scholarly impact assessment. Using a systematic conceptual review approach,the authors analysed 85 studies published between 1960 and 2025 were analysed to examine the conceptual foundations, applications, strengths, weaknesses, and emerging developments of both approaches. The findings indicate that citation analysis is effective for identifying influential publications and researchers, whereas bibliometric analysis provides a broader understanding of research productivity, collaboration, and knowledge structures. The study concludes that both approaches are complementary and that their integration, alongside qualitative assessment and expert judgment, supports more balanced, transparent, and responsible evaluation of scholarly impact.
